[La historia de ]Martin Guerre, el joven granjero que, hacia 1552, abandonó a su esposa para regresar a su hogar muchos años más tarde, cuando ya había sido dado por muerto, suscitó con su vuelta un célebre caso de usurpación de identidad.En una época en la que aún quedaban muy lejos los modernos procedimientos para fijar sin dudas razonables la identidad jurídica de las personas -las huellas digitales, las fotografías, el ADN-, los procesos en torno a problemas de suplantación de personalidad tenían que ser por necesidad prolijos y basados, sobre todo, en las declaraciones de los testigos y familiares de los protagonistas.
En el caso Martin Guerredeclararon varios centenares, a favor y en contra de cada uno de los «dos» Martin Guerre. Janet Lewis utiliza el largo y complicado proceso para plantear los profundos dilemas morales que el regresado Martin Guerrey la repentina aparición del otro que para sí reclama su identidad, suscitan. En primer lugar, en Bertrandede Rols, la esposa desgarrada entre el amor y la rígida moral católica en que había sido educada, y, en segundo, en los familiares, amigos y allegados delprotagonista.

Ralph échappe de justesse, sauvé par l'arrivée des adultes. Ce roman remarquable a un sens allégorique qu'il n'est pas difficile de comprendre : c'est l'aventure des sociétés humaines qui est tragiquement mise en scène par les enfants. Mais l'œuvre vaut avant tout par la description de leur comportement et par l'atmosphère de joie, de mystère et d'effroi qui la baigne.
